Two Fatally Injured In Army Helo Accident

Apache Went Down Near The Bayport Cruise Terminal In Houston, TX

Two U.S. Army Officers are presumed fatally injured after the Apache helicopter they were aboard went down near the Bayport Cruise Terminal in Houston, TX.

The accident occurred at about 1550 local time. Television station KPRC reports that that witnesses said the helicopter broke up in flight. They said the aircraft was flying unusually low over the vacant cruise ship terminal when they heard a loud noise and saw the aircraft break apart in flight. It went down in the water, and parts of the helo could be seen sticking up above the surface.

Multiple media outlets report that there was a rotor blade from the Apache AH-64 lying along a fence near the Bayport Terminal.

The aircraft was part of the 1-149th attack helicopter battalion of the Texas Army National Guard. Spokesman Master Sgt Sean Cowher said that all that the unit's pilots "are highly trained, highly qualified veterans who have been flying this aircraft for many years."

The pilots have not yet been identified.
