Controller's 'Joke' Costs Delta A Lot Of Fuel

Told The Pilot Of A 777 To Go Around, Then Said He Was Only 'Kidding'

The FAA is investigating a June 11 incident that caused the captain of a Delta Airlines Boeing 777 to go around ... though the controller said he was only kidding when he gave the instruction.

The flight was Delta Flight 630. USA Today reports that, according to the FAA, the flight was at about 1,000 feet on final approach when the controller told the pilot to go around. In just a few seconds, the controller said "I'm kidding" and cleared the pilot to land.

But by that time, the pilot has started the go-around procedure and could not resume the landing.

In a statement, the FAA would say only that it is "investigating air traffic communications with Delta 630, a Boeing 777 aircraft on approach to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport."

The agency would not say what disciplinary action the controller might face.
