Robinson’s 'Improved' Empennage Gains Approval

Symmetrical Horizontal Stab, Tailcone Improve Handling Characteristics

Robinson Helicopter Company announced that it has gained approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Argentina, Japan, and India for its improved empennage on all Robinson helicopter models.

The new empennage integrates a symmetrical horizontal stabilizer and tailcone, and is now standard on all newly-made Robinson helicopters.

These approvals follow the previous approval by the FAA for the R66 in 2023 and the R44 and R22 models in 2024. The company said that since the FAA approvals, it has delivered more than 700 retrofit kits. About 250 production aircraft have been built with the new empennage configuration, which is now standard on all models.

The symmetrical horizontal stab improves roll stability, particularly during high-speed flight. It also reduces right-roll tendency when the aircraft is operated outside of its normal flight envelope.

The improved handling allegedly enhances the safety and performance of the aircraft.

David Smith, President and CEO of Robinson Helicopter Company said, “This is a significant milestone in our commitment to continuous safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction around the world. This certification is a testament to our team’s tireless pursuit in enhancing the Robinson flying experience and setting new standards for safety and performance in the industry.”
