ALPA: Aircraft Certification Legislation Will Improve Aviation Safety

Also Contains Measures That Increase FAA Control And Oversight Over Certification Decisions

ALPA is applauding the inclusion of the Aircraft Certification, Safety, and Accountability Act in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which also includes valuable pro-airline worker provisions.

The aircraft certification legislation, originally introduced by House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), puts in place critical reforms to the aircraft certification process that will help ensure a proactive and objective safety culture across all levels.

Also contained in the ALPA-backed legislation are measures that increase FAA control and oversight over certification decisions. As the world’s largest nongovernmental aviation safety organization, ALPA has been working with regulatory authorities and stakeholders in the United States, Canada, and across the globe to make clear that changes are needed to reaffirm the FAA’s role and authority in the certification process and to improve transparency as it implements rigorous reform. ALPA continues to push for reform to improve aviation safety worldwide including international pilot training and qualifications improvements.
