JAL, ANA Ground Dreamliner Fleets

ANA Flight Made An Emergency Landing Wednesday After A 'Battery Problem' Was Detected

Two Japanese carriers, including launch customer ANA, have grounded their fleets of Boeing 787 Dreamliners after an ANA flight made an emergency landing Wednesday (local time) in the western region of Japan.

ANA Flight 629 made an emergency landing at Takamatsu airport in Japan after a battery warning annunciator lit up in the cockpit, according to airline vice president Osamu Watanabe. There were 129 people on board the plane.

CNN reports that some of those on board reported smelling smoke in the cabin. A separate annunciator said there was smoke in the forward electrical compartment.

The result of the incident was the complete grounding of the fleets of Dreamliners operated by both ANA and Japan Airlines. JAL flies seven of the airplanes, and ANA has 17 in operation on a normal basis. It was not clear how long the airplanes would be grounded, or if other airlines would be following suit by parking their 787s.

A spokeswoman for Boeing has said the planemaker is "aware of the event and working with the customer," but no official statement has yet been released.

The NTSB is investigating a battery fire that broke out on a JAL Dreamliner after it landed at Boston Logan International Airport last week, and the FAA has ordered a review of the airplane, but has said it is "safe to fly."
