Search Continues Off Oregon Coast For Pilot Of Downed F-15

Plane Goes Down During Training Mission

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 06.26.07 2130 EDT: Search and rescue efforts are underway to locate the pilot of an Oregon National Guard F-15 that went down off the Oregon coast Tuesday afternoon.

Media reports state the aircraft impacted the ocean approximately 35 miles west of Cannon Beach at around 1335 PDT. The pilot was the only person onboard.

The F-15 was from the 142nd Fighter Wing at Portland Air Base, and was participating in a training mission at the time of the mishap. The F-15 was one of eight jets -- a mix of F-15s and F/A-18s -- participating in the exercise.

A second jet circled the impact site until helicopters arrived onscene, Coast Guard Petty Officer Shawn Eggert told KGW-8.

There were no signs of a parachute, Eggert added, indicating the pilot was not able to eject from the fighter before it crashed.
