American Airlines To Cut More Workers In KC

Government Helping Workers?

American Airlines is showing the door to 500 more employees at their Kansas City aircraft overhaul facility. These layoffs take effect in June. 400 workers were laid off in December, bringing the total employment at the facility down to about 900.

The airline says that record fuel costs and tough competition are to blame according to media reports. American signed a 25 year lease with the city back in February that commits the airline to keep at least 700 workers at the Kansas City International Airport.

Displaced workers may see some help from the federal government. The US Department of Labor issued a $1.2 million grant recently to help retrain some of the workers who have been laid off. The grant brings the total of money received to help aviation workers to $10.3 million since March 2003.

The funds are intended to assist in counseling, career planning, employment development and occupational skills training.
