NTSB Prelim: Snyder Searey

The Pilot Heard A “Loud Bang,” And The Engine Lost All Power

Location: New Ipswich, NH Accident Number: ERA24LA276
Date & Time: June 25, 2024, 12:55 Local Registration: N453TS
Aircraft: Snyder Searey Injuries: 1 Minor
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General aviation - Personal

On June 25, 2024, at 12:55 eastern daylight time, an experimental, amateur-built Searey, N453TS, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near New Ipswich, New Hampshire. The pilot sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot intended to fly from the Brookline Airport (NH16), Brookline, New Hampshire to the Plateau Sky Ranch Airport (1F2), Edinburg, New York. The pilot reported that the preflight inspection, engine runup, and takeoff were all normal. About 20 minutes after takeoff, when the airplane reached the initial cruise altitude, the pilot heard a “loud bang,” and the engine lost all power. The pilot attempted to restore power to the engine four times; however, the engine never regained power. The pilot performed a forced landing in a wooded area, which resulted in substantial damage to the airplane’s fuselage, horizontal stabilizer, and both wings.

The wreckage was retained for further examination.
