Airborne 03.06.20: Scottish Airshow Cancelled, Sonex v Tree, Weather Camera

Also: Happy Birthday Masako, 'Berlin Candy Bomber', SAFO For PT6A, Abingdon Foundation Scholarship

The Scottish International Airshow has been cancelled for 2020 amidst a disagreement between the event's organizers and local officials.

In a notice posted on Facebook, the South Ayrshire Council said that the airshow organizers have breached their funding agreement with the council, leaving the body with no choice to withdraw funding from the event. The NTSB has released a factual report giving more details from an accident which occurred on December 15, 2018. The amateur-built Sonex B airplane, N393SX collided with a tree and terrain while on final approach to Lodi Lakeland Airport (9WN5), near Lodi, WI. The sport pilot sustained serious injuries, and the airplane was substantially damaged. The pilot reported that he entered the left downwind leg for runway 9 with the intention to make a full-stop landing. He stated that his turn from the downwind leg to base leg was uneventful; however, the airplane's airspeed had increased slightly during the base leg. The pilot stated that while he focused on maintaining proper landing airspeed the airplane drifted north of the extended runway centerline and the airplane's left wingtip collided with a treetop about 50-60 ft above the ground. The FAA is expanding its highly successful weather camera safety program to Colorado. The FAA has entered into a cost-reimbursement agreement with the State of Colorado Division of Aeronautics to install weather cameras on 13 AWOS installations in mountainous areas, beginning in the spring of 2020. These cameras will build on the success of a 20-year-old program in Alaska that has improved safety by providing near-real-time video to pilots from a network of more than 230 cameras across the state. In 1999, the FAA determined that pilots operating VFR would benefit from actual views of the current weather conditions where they were destined and the FAA Weather Camera Program was born. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
