San Pablo, CA Police Launch Public Safety Drone Program

Aircraft Introduced To The Public At National Night Out

The San Pablo Police Department has announced a partnership with Impossible Aerospace in deploying a comprehensive public safety drone program. We are the first law enforcement agency to partner with Impossible Aerospace for a program of this nature. Impossible Aerospace is a Bay Area based company, and was identified as a viable partner due to their proprietary battery technology in the development of their model US-1 drone.

The Impossible US-1 boasts an extended flight time in excess of one hour per flight. The SPPD said in a news release posted on Facebook that they believe this increased operational efficiency will greatly impact public safety in San Pablo, as officers can respond to specific priority incidents quickly without worrying about the restrictions of battery life.

In July, the FAA awarded the San Pablo Police Department with a Certificate of Authorization to deploy the US-1. They are one of a handful of agencies in Contra Costa County who have received this authorization. This authorization provides waivers other FAA licenses do not. Subsequently officers can now respond to critical incidents at any time, day or night, using the US-1.

The San Pablo Police Department and Impossible Aerospace have spent the past several months holding community meetings and meeting with community leaders to discuss the potential of a drone program in San Pablo. This community dialogue helped shape the policy and infrastructure of the drone program moving forward. On August 5, 2019, the San Pablo City Council unanimously approved the program which encompasses the procurement of three Impossible US-1 drones. Over the upcoming weeks, the Police Department will be training for full deployment as a team of pilots will be prepared to respond to critical incidents.

The drone was introduced to the public and deployment for scene security at the SPPD annual National Night Out Event Tuesday.
