Pelican Delivery Drone Receives Controller Upgrades

A2Z Drone Delivery Planning for U.S. Manufacturing

The RDSX Pelican delivery drone has had its flight controller upgraded to be more easily modifiable.

The flagship drone manufactured by A2Z Drone Delivery, Inc., of Torrance, California, has also had some slight design changes, the company said. The Pelican is a purpose-built, extended range, hybrid VTOL commercial delivery drone.

The open-source flight controller now enables customers to integrate their own flight systems and ancillary software more readily. The company considers it an important step in its move to bring manufacturing the Pelican in the United States.

The Pelican has a fixed wing with four rotors for vertical flight and an aft fuselage-mounted push rotor for horizontal flight. It incorporates automatic network selection to seamlessly transition between multiple 4G networks and also has a direct radio capability for optimum connectivity.

The Pelican now operates on the CUAV X7+ or Cube flight controllers. Either controller allows users to integrate their preferred software, radio beacons, or companion software to work with the Pelican. Adoption of the open-source controller is seen as an important step for A2Z to source components for the Pelican platform that will fulfill requirements for NDAA compliance. This will open the door for A2Z to apply for Blue UAS certification with the Defense Innovation Unit of the U.S. Department of Defense.
