Airborne 05.23.16: Si2 Lands in Dayton, BellHeli Relocation, Santa Monica Update

Also: Rockwell Collins, RC Antonov AN-225, Safety Culture In Alaska, Sonic 'Thump', Drone Reg. Data, Aiming For Mars, Hawaiian Pilots

The Solar Impulse-2 crew alerted ANN, early Saturday morning, that it’s next step in their trek around the world was about to depart Tulsa, Oklahoma, and head for Dayton, Ohio.

They departed Tulsa at 4:22am local time and, after a successful flight, landed at Dayton International Airport 16 ½ hours later. Si2 spent a week at the Tulsa International Airport until a clear weather window allowed them to continue their flights across the United States. The selection of Dayton, which was the home of Orville and Wilbur Wright, seems most apropos. Bell Helicopter has announced plans to relocate several programs in order to optimize manufacturing capabilities across multiple Bell Helicopter facilities. The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X final assembly in Lafayette, Louisiana, will relocate to the company’s Mirabel Assembly and Delivery Center in Canada. In addition, the Lafayette facility will receive the Bell 525 Relentless cabin subassembly, relocating from the Amarillo, Texas, as well as Fire Scout unmanned aerial vehicle modification work which is relocating from the Bell Helicopter facility in Ozark, Alabama. The legal battles over whether Santa Monica Airport lives or dies continue as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has determined that a lower district court prematurely dismissed a lawsuit that was brought by the City of Santa Monica to resolve the issue of whether is obligated to continue operating Santa Monica Municipal Airport. This action reopens the question of whether or not the property on which the airport is located could revert to the federal government if it ceases to be used as an airport. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
