Air Force May Close Wright-Patterson Aero Club

Cites Cost For Hangars, Aircraft Maintenance

The U.S. Air force said Tuesday that it plans to close the Wright-Patterson Aero Club, which has been in existence since 1954 and has 321 members.

The Air Force Materiel Command leadership has endorsed a recommendation to close the club, citing a loss of $229,000 over the past four years, according to the Dayton Daily News. Most of that expense has reportedly gone into maintaining the club's building and aircraft.

Base spokeswoman Laura McGowan said in an e-mail to the paper that the club membership was informed of the recommendation on Tuesday, and the club was to close within 60 days of final approval from the Air Force, which has the recommendation under review. Base officials said that maintaining the flying club was affecting their ability to support other recreational programs.
