University Student's Drone Takes Fire In Kansas

Aircraft Forced To Land After Being Damaged By Rifle Fire

A UAV belonging to a student at K-State Polytechnic was hit by rifle fire last week, causing damage to the aircraft.

Radio station KSAL reports that a 22-year-old student was flying the Strix Stratosurfer drone he built from a kit on October 31 when he heard the rifle shots. The drone started to shudder, but was able to land safely. When the student inspected his aircraft, he found a bullet hole.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan told the radio station that the student had permission to fly the drone over the land where it was being operated.

The Sheriff said that if the person who shot the drone is located, they could face criminal charges for discharging a firearm and damage to property.

The incident was reported to authorities on November 16. The student said he had built the drone as a school project.
