A4A Backs Bedford for FAA Administrator

Organization Urges Senate to Confirm Republic CEO as Next FAA Head

Airlines for America (A4A), an industry group representing major US airlines, recently shared its support for Bryan Bedford’s nomination to lead the Federal Aviation Administration. The organization called on the Senate to swiftly confirm Bedford, who is scheduled to appear before the Senate Commerce Committee for a nomination hearing on June 11.

In a statement, A4A described Bedford as a “superb choice,” citing his “decades of experience in aviation operations” and a supposed “commitment to safety above all else.” They praised his track record at Republic Airways, where he has served as CEO since 1999, and noted his familiarity with both airline operations and FAA cooperation.

The endorsement comes amid extreme pressure on the FAA to modernize aging infrastructure and prevent more safety lapses. The agency has faced criticism following a series of high-profile incidents, including the deadly January collision of Flight 5342 near Washington Reagan National Airport.

A4A highlighted the scale and importance of the US airspace, pointing out that commercial airlines transport 2.7 million passengers and 61,000 tons of cargo each day. The aviation industry supports over a million jobs and contributes about 5% to the US GDP.

Bedford’s resume includes leadership roles at Mesaba Holdings and Business Express Airlines before his long tenure at Republic. He holds a certified public accountant license, a commercial pilot license, and a finance degree from Florida State University. He’s received multiple industry accolades over time, earning him widespread support from commercial aviation stakeholders.

“We urge the Senate Commerce Committee to advance Mr. Bedford’s nomination and the entire Senate to expeditiously confirm him to be our nation’s next FAA Administrator. Our country deserves and needs to have a solid leader in this critical position as soon as possible,” A4A stated.

But not everyone is applauding. Bedford stirred controversy in 2022 by suggesting a reduction in pilot flight-hour requirements, specifically for graduates of  Republic’s LIFT Academy. He defended the idea by claiming that “using more technology, more flight simulation and we can do exactly the same thing” as the military.
