Florida Woman Charged In Bizarre Airline Incident

Police: She Tried To Open Door Of UAL 737 While In Flight

A 52-year old Florida woman arrested in Seattle last week has been charged with first-degree malicious mischief after authorities said she tried to open an emergency exit door of a United Airlines aircraft in-flight.

Flight 1195 from Denver to Sea-Tac was on approach, flying at about 3,800 feet, according to court documents, when Dempsey got out of her seat, walked to the back of the 737 cabin and tried to open the emergency exit. Although she wasn't able to do so, the effort triggered a warning in the cockpit.

Flight attendants said they wrestled the woman back in her seat. They told investigators Dempsey smelled of alcohol and was "mumbling something about being depressed and wanting to die," according to court papers quoted by local reporters.

If convicted, Dempsey could face 90-days in jail and a $20,000 fine. She's scheduled to be arraigned August 18th.
