Airborne 05.08.20: TBM 940 Update, NASA Says Stay Home, NBAA Cutbacks

Also: Mil Flyovers Curtailed, GE Layoffs, CARES Grants, Loyal Wingman Rollout

Daher has unveiled technical details for its TBM 940 very fast turboprop aircraft in the Model Year 2020 version, which is equipped with HomeSafe - an emergency system that automatically brings the airplane to a runway touchdown if the pilot becomes incapacitated.

The system is activated manually by a prominent orange button atop the cockpit instrument panel. Its software integrates weather, traffic and terrain information to select the best airport for landing, taking into account fuel range and runway length. The pilot can override the autoland function at any time to resume normal flight conditions by simply disconnecting the autopilot. NASA Boss, Jim Bridenstine, has an unexpected message to space fans, everywhere, who might otherwise have been interested in celebrating the upcoming launch of our first manned mission from US soil in nearly a decade... STAY HOME. Instead, he urged the public to watch the launch online or on TV from home. The COVID-19 pandemic has struck much of aviation, and has compiled an extensive list of indignities to some of aviation's best and brightest... and now the NBAA, itself, has had to step back and conserve resources as well, announcing layoffs on Tuesday. NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen announced the significant reduction to the organization's workforce, both to address challenges raised by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to retain a sharp focus on advocacy, strategic communications, operational support, the production of NBAA-BACE and other events, and other priorities for the association and industry. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
