Pilot, PAX OK After Landing Gear Failure

Velocity Airplane Landed On Its Belly In Key West, FL

A 2010 Velocity sportplane suffered a landing gear failure and landed on its belly at Key West International Airport Sunday, but the story has a mostly happy ending. While the airplane was damaged (the bad news), the pilot and three passengers all escaped without injury (the very good news).

The south Florida Sun Sentinel reports that the plane was being flown by Taras Rud of Vero Beach. He was unable to lower the landing gear on arrival at Key West, and executed the gear-up landing. The incident caused the airport to close its runway for about 45 minutes early Sunday afternoon.

The passengers included Annette Rene-Danigelis from Muskegon, MI, Olena Mikhnyk from Vero Beach, and Mikhnyk's three-year-old daughter, according to the Monroe County, FL Sheriff's Office. (Photo courtesy Monroe County FL, Sheriff)
