Shell Begins Sale of SAF in Singapore

Local Partners To Offer Greener Gas Blended In-Country

Singapore has received its first sustainable aviation fuel sales point after completing local upgrades to the local Shell facility. With the upgrades, blends with up to 50% conventional jet fuel can be created.

The addition of an in-country blending facility enables the high-traffic region to offer cheaper, more sustainable SAF compared to previous methods that required tanking from long distances for delivery to customers. For the first time, customers in the Changi Airport group can select SAF to offset their emissions, or just enjoy peace of mind knowing they're recycling waste products that otherwise would have gone to pollute. The SAF supplied is made from waste products and sustainable feedstocks, titrated with standard aviation fuel. At a later date, Shell intends to begin recovery of additional waste products in Singapore, to bring the benefits of recycling to the local area. The switch to SAF pays ecological dividends quite cheaply for the investment: If provided neatly, its use can reduce lifecycle emissions by 80% compared to stock, new production aviation fuel.

Today’s announcement is an example of how we are building the capabilities now to accelerate the use of SAF in Asia. We want to become a sustainability leader in this important market," said Jan Toschka, Shell Aviation president. "Alongside investing in our capabilities to produce SAF, we are also focused on developing the regional infrastructure needed to get the fuel to our customers at their key locations. Through leveraging our extensive refueling network, I am proud that we are helping our customers to decarbonise by becoming the first supplier of SAF in Singapore.”

Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of the Changi Airport Group, feels similarly. “Aircraft emissions and airport activities contribute to an airport’s carbon footprint. Changi Airport believes that SAF is one of the keys to unlock the future to a more sustainable air travel industry. We are committed to working actively with airlines, industry players and government agencies on the adoption of SAF with the goal of advancing Changi Airport as a sustainable aviation hub.”
