Butler National Corporation Announces Learjet 31A FAA ADS-B FAA Approval

Installation Approved For TCAS II Equipped Airplanes

The FAA has approved the STC modification application from Butler National Corporation for an ADS-B (Out) avionics solution in Learjet Models 31 and 31A with TCAS II.

The FAA STC-approved modification, STC Number ST02455SE, provides an independent ADS-B(Out) system with the installation of the Garmin GTX 3000 Transponders, the GDL 88 (Dual Band UAT/1090 Receiver with WAAS GPS Sensor) and the Flight Stream 210 Bluetooth Transmitter in the Learjet 31, 31A, 35, 35A, 36 and 36A, as well as the previously-approved Learjet Model 60.  STC ST02455SE provides a seamless interface to the existing TCAS II equipment while offering the crew access to ADS-B (In).  The modification allows reception of ADS-B(In) communications from the UAT ground stations, and the Flight Stream 210 transmits the information to on-board portable electronic devices (“PEDs”) such as iPads with compatible applications.

The ADS-B (Out) equipment mandate in the United States is set for January 1, 2020.  Butler National has previously obtained STC approval for ADS-B (Out) compliant solutions in the Learjet Model 24, 25, 31, 31A, 35, 35A, 36, 36A series airplanes without TCAS II and now has STC-approved ADS-B(Out) for Learjet Models 31, 31A, 35, 35A, 36, 36A and 60 series airplanes with TCAS II.

ADS-B (In) provides pilot cockpit advisory services that consist of Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) and Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B) as well as ADS-B Air-to-Air UAT and 1090 traffic.  FIS-B provides a broad range of textual/graphical weather products and other flight information to the general aviation community. FIS-B includes the following: Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Non-Routine Aviation Weather Reports (SPECIs), Terminal Area Forecasts (TAFs) and their amendments, NEXRAD (regional and CONUS) precipitation maps, Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) Distant and Flight Data Center, Airmen's Meteorological Conditions (AIRMET), Significant Meteorological Conditions (SIGMET) and Convective SIGMET, Status of Special Use Airspace (SUA), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Winds and Temperatures Aloft, and Pilot Reports (PIREPS).  TIS-B provides advisory traffic information of transponder equipped aircraft in the vicinity of ADS-B(Out) equipped airplane.

"Through Butler Avionics, we offer a range of cost-effective ADS-B compliant solutions for the legacy Learjets, from the Learjet 24 to the Learjet 60," said Clark D. Stewart, president and CEO. "The FAA-approved Butler National ADS-B STC solution not only provides ADS-B(Out) compliance, but also allows access to very useful pilot information on an iPad.

"Butler makes the use of some STC and related kits available to qualified avionics shops and provides detailed drawings in support of the STC-approved installations.  We believe our cost-effective Lear 31/31A ADS-B solution for aircraft having TCAS II provides customers more than just a compliance solution with the included ADS-B (In) functionality," Stewart continued. "Butler offers the ADS-B solutions to customers at our Butler Avionics facility in Olathe, Kansas (KIXD) or through qualified avionics installation facilities.”
