The annual pilgrimage to Reno by dozens of heavily modified racing aircraft is not without its hazards. Unlimited racing lost a major player this week as 'Precious Metal' -- a highly-modified P-51 Mustang, was lost in a fire shortly after refueling on the way to Reno. It’s reported that after being fueled and starting to taxi away from the fuel pumps, the fire erupted. By the time the aircraft was stopped, the fire had reached the cockpit and there was no choice but to abandon the aircraft. Fortunately, the pilot, Thom Richard was not injured.
