"The System Isn't Broken... Stop Trying To Fix It"
You just KNOW when AOPA President Phil Boyer has a chance to
speak directly with a representative with the Air Transport
Association -- trade association for the nation's airlines -- about
the hot-button topic of user fees... there's gonna be some quotable
comments.
Did Contractor Do Shoddy Work... Or Is This Just
Grandstanding?
Calling Long Island's MacArthur Airport "a model of exactly how
we should not run our airports," on Tuesday New York Senator
Charles Schumer called for the FAA to launch a safety audit of the
facility.
ANN REALTIME REPORTING 11.01.06 1345 EDT:
Things are returning to normal at Tampa (FL) International
Airport, where the discovery of a 'suspicious item' by TSA
screeners resulted in the partial evacuation of the airport
terminal.
The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) reports it
endorses the spirit of National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
safety recommendations for Part 135 operators announced at
Tuesday's hearing.
This week, Raytheon unveiled its Universal Control System (UCS)
-- a first of its kind unmanned aerial system (UAS) "cockpit" that
revolutionizes operator awareness and efficiency, while providing
the ability to control multiple unmanned aircraft, reduce potential
accidents, improve training, and decrease costs.
Fresh out of bankruptcy and helped by high ticket prices, UAL --
the parent of United Airlines -- posted a third-quarter net income
of $190 million. The news wasn't as rosy for Northwest Airlines,
however... which continued to lose money as it works to exit
Chapter 11.
More Than 60 Hours Of Seminars... And A Great Movie, Too
Attendees at next week's AOPA Expo in Palm Springs, CA will have

In what amounts to a major coup for Boeing, Brazil's TAM
Airlines announced late Tuesday it has firmed up plans to acquire
four Boeing 777-300ER airliners, with purchase options on four more
airframes.
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a Special

Flight Crews, Surgical Staffs Have Similar Dynamics
For many years it was common that the captain of an
aircraft was never questioned by his crew -- and many airplanes
went down when a simple cross-check might have averted disaster.
Now, the principle of Crew Resource Management (CRM) is considered
one of the best techniques to reduce pilot error -- and the medical
health field has taken notice.
It's no wonder that many midair collisions happen while one
airplane's crew is engaged in dual IFR instruction, or that so many
CFIs fail to catch a forgotten landing gear extension until the
belly hits the pavement.
"The trend is not surprising given the similarities between
health care and aviation. Both involve hours of boredom punctuated
by moments of sheer terror."
Source: Dr. David M. Gaba, a dean at the
Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, commenting
on a growing industry of pilots and aviation experts consulting
with hospitals and surgical centers, to apply the same crew
resource management (CRM) techniques used in aviation safety to the
operating room.
