Jobs Shifting In Torrance, CA Aerospace Sector

One Company Cutting 100 Jobs, But SpaceX May Add 200

An aerospace company in Torrance, CA has notified the state Employment Development Department that it plans to lay off 93 employees my mid 2018 as a manufacturing contract comes to an end, but SpaceX may come in to take up the slack and more.

Chemring Energetic Devices, which makes missile components, radar detection systems and other products for the defense industry is the company that plans to reduce its workforce. But according to The Daily Breeze newspaper, Torrance Economic Development Manager Fran Fulton said that a SpaceX startup company that she is not at liberty to name is talking with the city, and may hire as many as 200 employees in three years. SpaceX is in the process of expanding its home base in nearby Hawthorne, CA.

Other aerospace companies have also recently relocated to Torrance from Hawthorne, according to the report, citing lower commercial real estate prices and rental costs. So far, those moves have accounted for about 25 jobs, Fulton said.

Chemring is consolidating its operations in Downers Grove, IL following the purchase of Hi-Shear Technology Corp. in 2009. They say the reason for the move is both economic and logistical.
