The Month of Model Aviation Begins!

Academy of Model Aeronautics Invites the Community to Celebrate

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) is once again recognizing August as Model Aviation Month, with National Model Aviation Day officially set for August 16, 2025. Now in its twelfth year, the event invites AMA clubs across the country to showcase model aviation through flying demos, community events, and fundraisers.

While August 16 is the big day, the AMA Foundation acknowledges that not every club can host events on a specific date… so the celebration will continue throughout the entire month instead. Clubs are encouraged to schedule events whenever works best, and register them with AMA to get the word out. Events often include public flying days, educational outreach, charity fundraisers, and even “buddy box” flights to introduce newcomers to the sticks.

At the heart of it all is the AMA Foundation: a nonprofit organization established in 2013 to support the charitable and educational efforts of the AMA. The foundation funds youth outreach, scholarships, club grants, and more, framing aeromodeling not just as a hobby, but as a hands-on learning platform with a direct link to STEM education and full-scale aviation. Donations help fuel the Foundation’s work in promoting creativity, technical skills, and community.

The AMA, originally founded in 1936, promotes model aviation as a legitimate part of the aviation continuum. It is also a congressionally-recognized, community-based organization, giving it a central role in US aeromodeling advocacy. Events like National Model Aviation Day serve to connect clubs with their communities, educate the public, and show that flying tiny aircraft isn’t just play; it’s a gateway to real aviation careers and lifelong learning.

Clubs and attendees can also grab official event T-shirts to show their Model Aviation pride. Orders must be placed by June 1, 2025, for delivery ahead of the celebration.

Individuals and clubs can register events or check for nearby gatherings through the AMA website.
