SFO To Be A380-Ready

Says It Will Accommodate Super Jumbo

Officials at San Francisco International Airport promise they'll be ready to welcome the world's largest commercial jet when it debuts in 2006.

The Airbus A380 will carry 555 passengers, the most of any aircraft ever flown. Airbus North America Chairman Allan McArtor visited SFO this week to hear Airport Director John Martin say the FAA has certified the airport to accommodate the A380.

The double-decker jetliner is the poster child for Airbus's "bigger is better" philosophy. The company believes that, by applying economies of scale inherent in putting so many people in one plane, they'll actually save the airlines money.

SFO's schedule includes 50 daily non-stops to more than two dozen international cities. Test flights for the A380 will begin early next year with the airliner scheduled to enter service in the summer of 2006.
