Classic Aero-TV: Giving It A Whirl - Horizon Hobby’s RC Helicopter Offerings

From 2015 (YouTube Version): The Capabilities and Complex Talents of Today's RC Rotorcraft Result In Surprisingly Simple Fun!

While at eFest 2015, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, talks with a company known as Horizon Hobby to find out what’s going on in the rapidly changing world of remote control (RC) aircraft. In this interview, Jim talks with James Haley, the multirotor category manager for Horizon Hobby, about the hobby of flying RC helicopters.

This video covers RC helicopters, not to be confused with what are commonly referred to as, quadcopters. RC helicopters are scaled-down versions of full-scale helicopters. However, the RC helicopters do have some extraordinary capabilities not found in full-scale helicopters, as you will see in the video.

Haley reminds us that RC helicopters have been around for a while and have always been considered difficult to learn to fly. The early RC copters used coaxial rotors to make things easier and the more standard single rotor/tail rotor combination copters where the purview of the more experience flyers.

Now, Haley says things have changed. Remote control automatic stabilization systems now make the RC helicopters easier to learn on and easier to fly, and a new flyer can learn how to do it without “learning through crashes.”

As Haley gives us the information and advice, the video shows us the many styles and types of RC helicopters that are available. This video is the perfect primer if you are considering the hobby of RC Helicopter flying.

Be sure to look for our other Horizon Hobby videos that deal with airplanes and quadcopter.
