Airplane Reportedly Struck Power Lines, Impacted Apartment Building

A chartered Hawker 800 jet went down Tuesday in Akron, OH, resulting in the fatal injury of all nine people on board the aircraft. There have been no reported injuries or fatalities on the ground.

The Washington Post reports that Augusto Lewkowicz, the president of Fort Lauderdale-based Execuflight, told the Akron Beacon Journal that those on board consisted of seven passengers and a crew of two. The plane was on approach to Akron Fulton International Airport (KAKR) when the accident occurred.

The charter  flight had departed Monday from Fort Lauderdale, FL and landed in St. Paul, MN, Moline, IL, St. Louis, MO, and Cincinnati, OH. On Tuesday, the flight continued to Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Miamisburg, OH, and then on to Akron. It went down at about 1453 EST, according to Ohio State Patrol Lt. Bll Haymaker. The passengers were employees of Pebb Enterprises, a Florida-based property management firm, according to NBC News.

According to the report, the plane struck a powerline about four miles short of the runway at KAKR and went down, impacting an apartment building and becoming engulfed in flames.

Lewkowicz told the paper that the airplane had been "perfectly maintained, no squawks," and that there had been no conversation among the pilots that there was anything wrong with the jet.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that there was no one at home in the apartment building when it was struck by the jet. The area is mostly residential, but there are some local small businesses in the area.
