Young Eagles Programs Back in Action Across the Country

EAA's Youth Outreach Program Returns After Years of Postponement

The Leesburg, Florida chapter of the EAA, number 534, is back in action for the local Young Eagles Program after years of COVID cancellation.

The children showed up to Leesburg International Airport for a flight with EAA volunteers, exposing them to the wide world of aviation and hopefully setting them on the path of an enthusiast for life. Kids 8 to 17 are eligible for flights at Young Eagles Day at their local EAA chapters across the country, usually completed in light, single engine fixed wing aircraft.

Chapter 534 processed the kids and their guardians by filling out the necessary paperwork, assigning aircraft and pilots, and escorting their new charges for a brief preflight. A group of 5 chapter aircraft took the youngsters up on half hour flights, many making their way over their homes and letting them take the helm for a brief time. Once complete, each received their Young Eagle logbook, filled out with the flight's information and a certificate commemorating the flight. If they so choose, they can become official EAA student members, opening additional doors to their burgeoning hobby or career.

Student members in the EAA gain access to a network of science and technology museums, subscriptions to EAA publications, free flight lessons, and a Sporty's Learn to Fly Course to hone their fundamentals prior to a free flight lesson. The EAA's outreach programs are entirely voluntary, all services provided by local members who want to see aviation thrive and share their passion for flight with those who wouldn't otherwise have a chance to cultivate one.
