Emirates Chief Presses Airbus On A380neo

But Planemaker Says It has Other Priorities

Airbus recently said that it would not commit to an upgrade of its A380 superjumbo jet, which has caused some consternation for Emirates Airlines president Tim Clark.

Clark criticized Airbus for its decision, saying that the company should develop an A380neo. But Airbus says its priority for the extra-large plane was to make improvements in the existing version, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Airbus is mulling a larger version of the A350. And while it sees potential for an A380neo, the product focus is on the A350.

Clark told reporters recently that the decision indicates a "lack of clarity" on the part of airbus. But he said that he still thinks Airbus will build an A380neo. He said that the airline has been in talks with Airbus about a deal for the plane, but has not come to an agreement on price.

Emirates is reportedly about to take delivery of the 75th of 140 A380s it has on order. Clark said that if the A380neo is delayed, it will keep its existing superjumbos flying longer than it had originally planned.
