Airline Pilot Job Market Looking Up

AIR, Inc. Predicts Up To 10,000 New Jobs This Year

More than 300 pilots met with 52 representatives from 17 major, national, and regional airlines during AIR, Inc.’s Airline Pilot Career Seminar, Airline Forum, and Job Fair in Phoenix (AZ) earlier this month. Based on that and other factors, AIR, Inc. predicts approximately 7,000 - 10,000 new airline pilot jobs for 2004.

"During the Job Fair Saturday evening, American Eagle reported collecting more than enough résumés to fill 35 interview positions for late June and July, CitationShares interviewed pilots for 16 new crews, while other airlines handed out applications and received numerous résumés" said Kit Darby, president of AIR, Inc. "Yes, 2004 is definitely looking better for the pilot job market. At the current rate, airline pilot hiring for 2004 will exceed 9,000 new jobs!" Year-to-date, 4,068 pilots have been hired by 117 different airlines - About as many pilots as were hired in 2003 (4,743).

The 17 airlines represented at the Job Fair in Phoenix on June 12 were three majors: America West, FedEx and Southwest Airlines; five nationals: AirNet, American Eagle, ASA, Comair and Mesa Airlines; four jet operators: Ameriflight, Skyway Airlines, TradeWinds and USA 3000 Airlines; two Non-Jet: PSA Airlines and TAB Express; Fractional: CitationShares; two Others: CAE Simuflite, Gulfstream International. Highlights of the seminar included Aeroservice Aviation Training Academy, a commercial aviation training organization based in Miami (FL), awarding a choice of a free B-727/737/747 type rating, valued at $8,400, to seminar attendee Dennis Lorenson from Sierra Vista (AZ).

Some of the other items awarded during the seminar included a sim prep, valued at $375, donated by Higher Power Aviation and two CRJ 200 FMS Training CD’s valued at $499 each, donated by Aerosim.

In addition to the seminar, seven separate workshops were offered throughout the weekend. The workshops featured were Furlough Survival, Crew Resource Management, Military to Airline Transition, Résumés/Applications, Interview Survival, Civilian to Airline Transition, and Testing and Simulator Check. The next AIR, Inc. Airline Pilot Career Seminar, Airline Forum, Job Fair and Workshops is scheduled for September 17-19, 2004, at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner in Washington (DC).
