UAL Hit With Big EPA Fine

Turned down by the Air Transportation Stablization Board, struggling to find an economic partner to help bring it out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, United Airlines now has something else to worry about.

Pollution.

United has reportedly agreed to pay an EPA fine of $850,000 for violating state and federal laws covering the way hazardous waste is handled.

Specifically, the EPA found open waste containers at the airline's San Francisco base between 1999 and 2001. Investigators also accused United of mislabeling waste barrels and keeping hazardous waste on site for more time than allowed by law.

The settlement still needs approval from United's federal bankruptcy judge. But under the deal, the airline also agreed to develop new internal safeguards against environmental violations.
