A Landing They All Walked Away From

Cessna 210 Pilot Saves His Family

You've heard the expression, "Never say die"? This guy seems to us to be living proof.

Monte Neilan, 35, took off from Provo Airport around 1100 local time Monday. On board were his wife, Nicole, 35, and their sons, Andrew, 12, and Nyle, 4. Not long after leaving the ground, his Cessna T-210 lost all power -- engine, electrics, everyting -- while over Utah Lake.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Neilan headed for the airport at Spanish Fork. But he didn't have the altitude or airspeed to make it. The ground below appeared to be soggy, so he kept his gear up and headed for a field in Lake Shore.

There were powerlines. Neilan avoided them. He set down and skidded for about 500 feet before coming to a stop. Sure, there was damage to the T-210's prop and underbelly. But Neilan, his wife and children all walked away. The FAA and NTSB will investigate.
