Airborne 09.04.19: Martian Helicopter!, Eviation Acquired, Perlan 2

Engineers have attached NASA's Mars Helicopter, which will be the first aircraft to fly on another planet, to the belly of the Mars 2020 rover at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The twin-rotor, solar-powered helicopter was connected, along with the Mars Helicopter Delivery System, to a plate on the rover's belly that includes a cover to shield the helicopter from debris during entry, descent and landing. The helicopter will remain encapsulated after landing, deploying to the surface once a suitable area to conduct test flights is found at Jezero Crater, the rover's destination. The Clermont Group has completed its acquisition of Eviation Aircraft. On January 23, 2019, Clermont entered into an agreement to acquire majority control of Eviation. The acquisition process has now concluded, and Clermont has been issued equity equal to 70% of Eviation’s share capital on a fully diluted basis. Eviation is working to become the first-to-market manufacturer of an all-electric propulsion aircraft, named Alice. Alice, which targets middle-mile commutes of up to 650 miles, was unveiled at the Paris Air Show in June this year. The Perlan 2 glider reached another milestone last week, achieving its highest tow ever during a flight August 28th. The aircraft reached an altitude of 46,700 above sea level pressure altitude before being released by the tow plane. Perlan team member Dr. Daniel Johnson writes on Facebook that the record was achieved because the airplane-glider tandem climbed slowly as it wandered all over the sky looking for workable wave lift that could bring the glider into the predicted strong wave high above. They did not find satisfactory lift. After release, the glider only gained about 800 feet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
