Northwest Flight 188 Pilots Appeal License Suspensions

Tickets Pulled For Overflying Destination, Going 90 Minutes With No Radio Contact

The two pilots who flew 150 miles beyond their destination two weeks ago have filed an appeal to the revocation of their pilot certificates, an NTSB spokesman said Thursday.

Northwest Captain Timothy B. Cheney, 53, and First Officer Richard I. Cole, 54, were enroute from San Diego, California, to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport on October 21 when ATC lost radio contact with the Airbus A320 near Denver, Colorado. The FAA said the pilots were "extremely reckless" and endangered the public by their actions. Both were suspended by Delta Northwest, and both were subject to an emergency revocation of their pilot certificates by the FAA.

CNN reports that both pilots have appealed that decision.
