Airborne Police Officer Killed In CA Accident

Aircraft Monitoring Highway Speeders Went Down On Patrol

A California Highway Patrol pilot was killed Saturday when the plane he was flying went down about 0930 local time in Imperial County, CA.

Officer Danny Benavides had been assigned to duty monitoring speeders on a highway when the accident occurred. The Associated Press reports that the patrol communication center lost contact with the 39 year old pilot, and called in an SAR team involving both police and military personnel.

The wreckage was finally located is a desert area near California Highway 78 around 1600. A CHP news release said that Benavides had just finished working one section of roadway, and was enroute to another portion when the accident occurred.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
