House GOP Budget Includes Placeholder For ATC Privatization

Budget Committee Introduced Bill Tuesday

The budget introduced by the Republican majority in the House Budget Committee contains a placeholder for ATC privatization.

An analysis provided by HAI indicates that the legislation includes a reserve fund for any legislation that would privatize air traffic control as well as the placeholder for the idea. The bill supports efforts by Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA) to place ATC under a separate, nonprofit corporation rather than the FAA.

What is still not known is whether House Republicans can form a unified front for the budget, which cuts spending by $6.5 trillion and balances the federal books in 10 years. It would also require passage of legislation this year to cut $30 billion in overall spending, and a vote this year on a Constitutional Amendment to require a balanced budget.

The bill was scheduled for markup Wednesday.
