FAA Awards Type Certificate To Hartzell for Turbine Engine Composite Prop

Launch customer to be announced at NBAA 2010

The FAA has granted a type certificate (TC) to Hartzell Propeller for its new advanced-composite ASC-II 4-bladed propeller. This is Hartzell's first ASC-II propeller developed for turboprop aircraft, and its launch customer will be announced at NBAA 2010 in Atlanta, GA.

Hartzell's new 4-bladed, 93-inch diameter, ASC-II advanced composite propellers with lightweight aluminum hubs will save over 30 lbs compared to an equivalent metal-bladed propeller.

"Our development of an advanced-composite ASC-II prop specifically for turboprop aircraft is the beginning of an exciting new phase for Hartzell," said Mike Disbrow, Hartzell's senior VP marketing and customer services. The certification process has been purposely rigorous, and this certification expands our product line to reach an even wider range of potential customers. Our ASC-II composite blade technology is beneficial for any OEM or modifier that needs to reduce aircraft weight without giving up any durability.

"For strength and durability, the composite section of the propeller is composed of high strength carbon fiber," he continued. "In order to achieve propeller TC approval the new blades underwent more than a year-long test program that included endurance, fatigue, lightning strike, bird strike, and propeller vibration testing, ultimately achieving certification for an unlimited fatigue life."
