Senate Bill Approved, Goes To Governor For Signature

Ohio Senate Bill 24, sponsored by State Senators Terry Johnson (R-McDermott) and Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City) was passed by the Senate, adopting the 1905 Wright Flyer III as the official state airplane.

The bill will now go to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine for his signature to enact it into law.

The Wright Flyer III was the third iteration of the Wright Flyer and the first to achieve and maintain sustained, controlled flight. It first flew on June 23, 1905 and its longest flight took place on October 5,1905 when it flew for 39 minutes and 24 seconds.

Senator Johnson said, “This was an invention that truly changed the world. Modern aviation began right here in Ohio, and it is important that we recognize the Wright Brothers' accomplishment as a truly significant part of our heritage, one that has made such a profound contribution to our state, our country and the entire human race."

Senator Huffman said, "The Wright brothers significantly contributed to Ohio’s rich history and altered how the world views transportation. While already recognized nationally, the technology they developed here is worthy of statewide recognition."

The original airplane was restored with the help and oversight of Orville in 1947 and is on display at the Wright Brothers Aviation Center at Carillon Historic Park in Dayton.

The 1905 Wright Flyer III is the only aircraft in the country that is designated as a National Historic Landmark.
