Airbus Says A380 Primed For Strong 2012

Company Says Production Issues Are Being Solved

Airbus, which delivered four of its A380 super-jumbos this month, and 26 for the year 2011, says it expects to better that mark and deliver 30 of the big planes in 2012, as production problems continue to be resolved. Since entering service in October of 2007, only 67 of the big planes have been delivered, or an average of 16 per year through the end of 2011.

Falling behind pace is especially painful for Airbus on this plane, which won't recover its development costs for years. Airbus claims the plane will break even in 2015, when projections suggest about 200 deliveries. Some analysts calculate it will take more than 400 deliveries.

An Airbus spokesman has told Air Transport World the pace of production will eventually reach as many as 40 A380s per year.
