Another Aviator Spends Day At The Beach

Second Emergency Landing on Northeastern Beach Since Wednesday

For the second time since Wednesday, a small aicraft landed on a Northeast US beach Sunday. This time, it was on New York's Fire Island. The PT-26 warbird was forced to make an emergency landing, perhaps because of mechanical problems. The plane, reportedly used as a skywriter, touched down on Saltaire beach, not far from the home of fashion designer Liz Claiborne, at about 9:30 a.m. Neither person aboard the small plane was hurt. Same goes for those on the beach.

After realizing the plane was no danger to them, beachgoers who'd fled in panic at the sight of the stricken aicraft's approach returned to gawk. The FAA is investigating the incident.

Wednesday, pilot Anse "Windy" Windham and his grandson, just two days from completing a circumnavigation of the continental US, were forced to land on a beach near Atlantic City (NJ). Neither was hurt. Witnesses describe that landing as "picture perfect."
