More Indian Women Earning Pilot Certificates

Many Following Childhood Dreams To learn To Fly

An increasing number of women in India are taking up flying as a hobby ... many following childhood dreams of learning to fly. For others, it is increasing exposure to airplanes and aviation that are sparking their interest.

But what ever the reason, flying clubs around the country are seeing more women entering the cockpit ... not as careers but as hobbyists, according to a report appearing in the Deccan Times.

Like most places, learning to fly in India is not cheap. The paper reports that the average cost is between $4,000 and $8,500 for a 3-4 month course, and a basic microlight airplane will set an owner back some $40,000 to $50,000.

Still, women who can afford it are enthusiastic about the opportunity to fly. New pilot Mimita Mishra told the paper "I am a business executive by profession, but flying a plane has been my dream since the age of 5. Learning flying has been the greatest experience of my life."
