Army Awards Teledyne FLIR Defense Contract For Black Hornets

Nano-Drone Contract For $91 Million

Teledyne FLIR Defense announced they have been awarded a five-year contract for up to $91 million to provide its Black Hornet® 4 Personal Reconnaissance Systems to the U.S. Army. Soldiers are using the nano-drones to augment small unit reconnaissance and surveillance capability.

The advanced nano-UAVs are being sourced under the Soldier Borne Sensor (SBS) program Phase II. The Black Hornet 4 is designed to be easy for the soldier to carry, deploy quickly, and rapidly send video and images back to the soldier/operator. The nano-drone provides soldiers with better situational awareness capability safely from protected positions.

Teledyne FLIR has already received $25 million initial orders for the first batch of deliveries that include the Black Hornet 4 drones, controllers, spare parts, and training.

The Army began acquiring the Black Hornet 3 systems in 2018 under Phase I and since then have placed over $215 in additional orders for the multi-faceted UAVs.

More than 40 countries are using Black Hornet systems for quick response when soldiers need to collect crucial information about the areas they are operating in and moving into.

Dr. JihFen Lei, president of Teledyne FLIR Defense explained, “The Black Hornet 4 stands out as the world’s most capable nano-UAS for the world’s most high-risk missions. We are honored the Army continues to place its trust in us as drone-of-choice provider for Soldier Borne Sensor, and we’re proud to see our technology making a real difference for warfighters on the battlefield.”
