Indians to Get Avgas Break

Most is Used by Government; Students are Small Percent

India's Economic Times, part of the Times News Network, says that India's government is going to repeal its onerous taxes on avgas. It noted, "Imported aviation gas carries a basic customs duty of 20% and a countervailing duty of 16%. The excise duty rate is also 16%."

The military uses roughly 2/3 of the avgas consumed in the country. A requested special exemption for civilian student flight use was dismissed, due to the small amount of gas they are believed to be using; instead, the entire civil segment got relief.

The tax break is seen as good news for not just the civilian pilots (who need to keep current), but also for native flight schools, who have seen increasing numbers of their prospects travel out of country to save money on their training.
