Eleven Fatally Injured In Polish Skydiving Accident

One Survived When Piper Navajo Went down

A Piper Navajo carrying 11 skydivers and a pilot went down in Poland Saturday resulting in the fatal injury of 11 of those on board. A twelfth person was reportedly taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The French news service AFP reports that Barbara Minczykiewicz, who lives in the village of Topolow where the accident occurred, said that the plane was making "strange sounds" as it flew to the south. She said it was "flying very low, close to houses. It tilted to side on its wing and caught fire."

Village residents reportedly were able to extricate one live person and two bodies from the aircraft.

The plane departed from an airfield in Rudniki near Czestochowa, according to AFP.

Polish media reports that the plane was possibly overloaded, but no cause of the accident has been determined.
