Was It Wrong To Rescue?

FAA Says Daring Effort To Extend Gear Broke No Rules

It was a little kinky, sure. But the FAA has concluded its investigation into the Waldo-Pepper style rescue of a beleaguered Cessna 172RG at New Smyrna Beach, FL, deciding no FARs were violated.

Still, "This is not something you see every day, but there were no violations of regulations," FAA spokesman Kathleen Bergen told the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

As Aero-News reported a couple of weeks ago, the drama began when Epic Aviation flight instructor Jason Messenger and student Kenneth Barrett were at the end of their morning session. The left main gear failed to deploy upon approach to landing. For an hour, Messenger flew about 10-feet off the runway and a crew manning a Jeep batted at the faulty gear with a fireman's pole.

It worked. The entire exercise, broadcast on live television September 16th, ended in a safe landing.

Bergen said the FAA determined during the course of its investigation that the gear had been damaged in a previous hard landing. Epic executives said they plan to send the parts off to Cessna for assessment.
