While Global Flyer Languishes, Bills Mount Up

But Kansas Airport Says It's Worth It

The Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer project has so far cost a small Kansas airport about $38,000 so far. And executives at the Salina Airport Authority say it's money well-spent.

"We probably couldn't have bought this much publicity," the authority's finance manager, Shelli Swanson, told Salina Journal reporter Tim Unruh.

Fossett was supposed to have taken off earlier this month. But the jet stream has so far refused to cooperate. He could depart as early as Sunday if weather conditions are favorable.

Salina Airport, the beginning and end point of Steve Fossett's solo, around-the-world record attempt, usually spends as much as $50,000 a year on promotions, Swanson said. But the return-on-investment, in this case, is worldwide publicity, Swanson said.
