Helicopter Hoists Three To Safety

The U.S. Coast Guard announced that a crew in a Sikorsky MH-60 helicopter from Coast Guard Station Astoria, Oregon, rescued two teenagers stranded on the side of a cliff near Roads End Point in Lincoln County, Oregon on July 5, along with a firefighter from the Lincoln County Fire Department who had gotten stuck while attempting to rescue the two teens.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River were contacted by Lincoln County Dispatch who requested assistance with the rescue of two teens, along with the firefighter.

After arriving onsite a rescue swimmer descended to the location where they were trapped and one by one carried out hoists of all three up to the helicopter.

After they were safely gathered aboard the helicopter the three were transported to Siletz Bay Airfield. There were no injuries reported.

CDR Amanda Denning, Executive Officer of Coast Guard Air Station Astoria explained, "Our air crews frequently train with our agency partner agencies to conduct rescues in a variety of conditions and terrain in the Pacific Northwest. We are extremely happy that we were able to rescue the three individuals and transport them to safety."

According to North Lincoln Fire & Rescue who took a call from the two 14-year-old boys, they became stuck while attempting to reach God’s Thumb Trailhead at Roads End recreation site near Lincoln City.

A member of the fire department hiked to the cliff to determine if they were injured and attempted a rescue, but then got stuck as well.
