Cavanaugh Museum's Corsair Makes Belly Landing

It's Gonna Be OK

It figures: just when the plane's out of the detail shop, getting all those little scratches fixed, something goes wrong, and then there's more scratches to fix.

So went the story of Doug Cavanaugh's Goodyear-built FG1D Corsair. He told ANN, "We just had it out of the paint shop, getting some touchup. It flew the day before -- it ran good, everything was fine, in an hour-and half flight." So, the beauty was ready to go to see some folks in Denver, but "fifteen minutes into the flight, it lost oil."

Doug didn't know exactly why the oil was missing: "It's in the area of the oil cooler -- it burst, or sprung a leak, or something -- it pumped all the oil out."

Once things had gone to heck, though, Doug's pilot did the right thing. "He picked out a nice soft, plowed field, and slid it in," Doug said.

Damage? "Gear doors, flaps; the engine has to be looked at; and the prop is shot -- the blades are bent. And there's some more scratches."

It's going to be better, soon: "We've already got it on its wheels and in a barn," Doug assured us, "and it's coming back home in a couple days. There's no serious structural damage."
