FAA Will Take No Action Against Parachute Company

Two Fatally Injured In August Of Last Year

The Parachute Center in Lodi, CA will not face sanctions from the FAA despite their finding of "discrepancies in the records of the instructor" who was one of two people fatally injured died during a jump in August of last year.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the FAA's announcement came Monday, closing a year-long investigation into a tandem skydive that fatally injured instructor Yong Kwon, 25, of South Korea and Tyler Nicholas Turner, 18, of Los Banos. CA.

The USPA determined that Kwon was not certified in the U.S. as a skydive instructor. However, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said that the agency could not take action against the business because he presented paperwork signed by an instructor who was not in the U.S. when the document was signed. Gregor said that the agency could cite Kwon, or the person who signed the paperwork, but not the business.

The California legislature is considering a bill that would make skydiving businesses responsible for assuring that their instructors are properly certified. It passed the general assembly in May, and is pending in the state Senate.

The USAPA has reportedly revoked the memberships and instructor ratings of several people who were involved in the accident, according to the FAA.
