Souther Field Becomes Jimmy Carter Regional Airport

But Not Everyone Agrees With The Change

An airport in rural south Georgia has been re-named for former President Jimmy Carter, over the objections of some who were opposed to the change.

The New Georgia Encyclopedia online says that Souther Field is the nation's oldest continuously operating civilian airport. It was constructed by the Army in 1918, and currently belongs to the city of Americus.

A letter-writing campaign mounted by those against the name change said they have no beef with Carter, but that they wanted to preserve the history of the area. The airport was named for Major Henry Souther, who had helped develop the airport as a military training base in WWI. Charles Lindbergh made his first solo flight from Souther Field.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Carter thanked those who wrote, saying they had helped to publicize the change. He said many of his relatives are buried in close proximity to the airport, and he intends to join them one day.
